Feeling Fidgety? Tools for Calm (and Great Gifts!)

Ever notice how you just have to move sometimes?
Whether it’s bouncing your leg, tapping your fingers, or pacing the room, these small movements can actually be your body’s way of releasing energy—especially when you’re in fight or flight mode.
Fidgeting isn’t just about managing OCD or body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs). It can also provide a much-needed outlet for anxiety, restlessness, or the urge to physically “do something.”

Over the holidays, I visited Kerrytown in Ann Arbor to meet up with an old childhood friend. Together, we wandered into the store Catching Fireflies, right across the street from Zingerman’s (which, by the way, has the BEST hot chocolate—if you are also a whipped-cream junkie in need of a hot cocoa fix, it’s a must-visit!).
Inside the shop was a fabulous assortment of fidget toys, but I was absolutely transfixed by the squishy cube called "The Nice Berg" pictured above. It’s so soft and satisfying, I couldn’t put it down!
This holiday season, why not lean into the magic of fidget tools for yourself—or as gifts? Fidget gadgets aren’t just calming; they also make fantastic stocking stuffers or thoughtful presents for anyone looking to bring more mindfulness into their day.
1. Slime: A Surprisingly Satisfying Solution
Slime might sound like it’s just for kids (or for 90's Nickelodeon shows), but it’s an incredible sensory tool for people of all ages. The Strategist rounded up the best slimes on the market, and there’s truly something for everyone. Looking for calm? Try a fluffy cloud slime. Want a dose of nostalgia? Go for sparkly or scented options.
Why slime works:
Engages multiple senses: The texture, colors, and scents create a grounding experience.
Provides a release: Stretching, squishing, and molding slime offers a physical outlet for nervous energy.
Bonus: Slime is small and portable, making it easy to toss in a stocking or gift bag!
2. Fidgets for BFRBs and Beyond
If slime isn’t your thing, check out The Great Big List of Favorite Fiddles from the TLC Foundation for Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors. These tools are perfect for redirecting urges and soothing restless energy. Some favorites include:
Tactile fidgets: Squishy balls, textured spinners, or stretchy putty.
Weighted or wearable items: Compression gloves or sensory rings for comfort and grounding.
DIY hacks: Textured fabrics, Velcro strips, or even keychains with fun textures.
Fidget tools aren’t just for BFRBs—they’re amazing for anyone who experiences anxiety or finds themselves in flight mode. Keeping your hands busy can calm your mind and channel excess energy in a way that feels productive and soothing.
The Perfect Gift Idea
Not sure what to get that one person who “has everything” for their birthday or next holiday season? Fidget tools make thoughtful and budget-friendly gifts that show you care about their well-being. From colorful slimes to stylish sensory rings, there’s something for everyone—and they’re a unique way to encourage mindfulness and stress relief.

Another fantastic fidget tool worth mentioning is Globules.

Years ago, I had a patient at Michigan Medicine who introduced me to them and raved about how satisfying they were. Since then, every patient I’ve recommended them to has absolutely loved them too. They’re squishy, versatile, and perfect for keeping your hands engaged in a soothing way.
Disclosure: I don’t sell any fidget toys or have stock in fidget toys, so rest assured—I have zero vested interest in what you buy, where you buy it, or whether you splurge or snag a bargain. My only agenda here is your fidgeting fulfillment.
